What is Hermosa?
South32 is developing Hermosa as a different type of mine that responsibly produces critical minerals, putting Arizona in the driver’s seat of securing our energy future and transforming the local economy.

Powered by advanced technology and innovation
Hermosa will be next-generation mine supported by advanced automation and real-time data. At the center is Centro, Hermosa’s remote operations hub in Nogales – bringing technology, safety, and efficiency together in a modern workplace.

Four Key Benefits
Hermosa is a rare opportunity to start with a blank sheet of paper and design every detail, from infrastructure and technology to workforce culture, with one goal in mind: setting a new standard for sustainable mining. South32 will unlock new opportunities for Southern Arizona, improving people’s lives now and for generations to come.
Hermosa will set a new standard for sustainable mining, with advanced technology that makes it safer than older mines. With a limited surface footprint and water use roughly 90% less compared to similar mines in the region, South32 is dedicated to being a responsible neighbor in Santa Cruz County.

South32 committed $2.16 billion, representing the largest private investment in the local economy to date. Hermosa is expected to generate around 900 good-paying jobs and deliver millions in new tax dollars for schools and county services.

South32 works closely with local officials, Tribes, and community members to share value, build trust, and support a resilient regional economy. We’re committed to making a positive difference, investing over $3 million in local non-profit groups, social services, and schools.

Hermosa has the potential to strengthen the domestic supply chain of five minerals designated as critical by the US federal government – including zinc and manganese – and which the US is heavily reliant on foreign sources.

The Hermosa Difference
Footprint
Our underground mining method enables a surface footprint of just 750 acres, a fraction of the size of other mining projects.
Transportation
We plan to use an underground all-electric vehicle fleet to cut noise, improve safety, and reduce emissions.
Underground Mining
We plan to use cement paste backfill, returning tailings with cement underground to reduce surface impact and reduce the risk of subsidence.
Power Source
We plan to integrate renewable energy where feasible, lowering emissions and supporting regional clean power goals.
Dry-Stack Tailings
We built one of the nation’s first modern dry-stack tailings facilities, reducing surface impacts and improving safety and water conservation.
Water Management
We use 90% less water compared to similar mines in the region and work with the community to responsibly manage, treat, and recharge water into the environment.
Biodiversity
Since 2012, we’ve monitored wildlife and biodiversity to protect ecosystems and ensure a positive legacy beyond mine life.
Community Health
To protect employee and community wellbeing, we partnered with the University of Arizona to monitor impacts and transparently report baseline findings.
From exploration to operation
South32 is progressing through planned development stages that emphasize safe operations, environmental responsibility, and community engagement, all while delivering long-term value for Southern Arizona.
Exploration and studies
Extensive technical studies confirmed the scale and opportunity of the Hermosa mineral resources across multiple deposits.
Permitting and design
Hermosa is the first mining project included in the federal FAST-41 program, supporting a transparent, coordinated, and predictable permitting review.
Construction underway
Construction has commenced on underground development.
Future operations
Zinc production is anticipated in the coming years, with further opportunities for manganese and other minerals.
