The Hermosa Difference
South32 is designing Hermosa with advanced technology to be safer and more sustainable than older mines, producing critical minerals as a different kind of mine, setting a new standard for sustainable mining, and unlocking community opportunity.
Building the foundation for next-generation mining. In early 2020, South32 completed a $40 million voluntary cleanup of mine waste left by a previous miner at Hermosa in the last century.
Our voluntary cleanup through Arizona’s Voluntary Remediation Program helped to:
- Save taxpayers money.
- Restore the natural environment.
- Stop heavy metals from polluting local waterways.
- Build one of the nation’s first dry-stack tailings facilities.
South32 is working to build strong relationships with local Tribes that have historic affiliation to the project area and neighboring lands.
Since 2019, even prior to our permit application submission, we have engaged 14 different Tribes with historic affiliation near the site. We voluntarily conducted a cultural resource survey across 30,000 acres, including on private lands.
