South32 Hermosa Awarded Prestigious Mine Safety Award

October 1, 2026

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

‍WASHINGTON, D.C. – South32 Hermosa earned a 2025 Sentinels of Safety Award, the nation’s most prestigious and longest-running recognition for mine safety, in the Underground Metal Group category. The award recognizes Hermosa’s outstanding safety performance and consistent commitment to fatality and serious injury prevention. The Hermosa team received the award from the National Mining Association (NMA) on October 1 in Washington D.C.

Since 1925, the Sentinels of Safety Award has honored mining companies in various operational categories for achieving the greatest number of employee work-hours without an injury that resulted in lost workdays. To be considered for a Sentinels of Safety Award, a company must complete at least 4,000 employee work-hours during the year without a lost-time injury or fatality. This safety performance data is reported directly by MSHA (US Mine Safety & Health Administration), the federal safety regulatory agency for mines. The awards were developed by then Commerce Secretary and future President Herbert Hoover, a former mining engineer.

“At South32, we are united by our safety guarantee that everyone goes home safe and well. We believe nothing is more important than the health, safety and wellbeing of our team and work relentlessly to ensure our safety guarantee is at the forefront of everything that we do. This recognition reinforces our team’s commitment to continuous improvement and constant vigilance,” said Pat Risner, South32 Hermosa President.

“Safety is the foundation on which our industry stands,” said Rich Nolan, National Mining Association president and CEO. “With mineral, material and electricity demand all rapidly growing, American economic and national security count on our ability to safely and responsibly mine. These winners are at the leading edge of today’s modern, dynamic and safe mining industry that is working to meet the demands of the most materials and energy intensive period in American history.”

The award comes as South32 Hermosa recently completed the Federal permitting process, enabling development to begin on federal forest service land, while construction on private land, already half way complete, continues.
