Ember Flagg

Senior Underground Mine Geologist

SHARE

Say hello to Ember! As Senior Underground Mine Geologist at Hermosa, she has spent the past year and a half overseeing the routing of NAG/PAG material for both shaft and decline development, while also leading a team of underground geologists focused on establishing foundational protocols for future mining operations.

Although Ember’s responsibilities will change once Hermosa begins operations, she’s enjoying the process of building a mine from the ground up, and it’s one of the reasons she joined our team. Having worked at a mine during its final stages and through closure, she was motivated to join South32 to gain experience with the opposite end of the mine life cycle and contribute to its development.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of my work specifically, is seeing a mine plan executed successfully. There’s a distinct sense of accomplishment when a stope delivers the expected grade at the mill. Given the many variables that can affect underground operations—such as improper stope performance, hung passes, or ore dilution—achieving planned ounces is always a serious rush.”

When asked “Is there something you wish more people knew about working in mining?” she says she wishes more people had a broader understanding of the mining industry and knew that anyone can join! Ember brings this belief to life through her work and is committed to fostering an inclusive workplace. At her previous job, she designed and oversaw the construction of an underground lactation pod to support working mothers, including herself. This same dedication carries into her work with Women in Mining Arizona, where she is currently an active member and hopes to help expand engagement at Hermosa.

Ember says her favorite thing so far about her experience at South32 is the safety culture and work life balance it provides. “Having come from an environment where late-night calls about ground falls and injured personnel were common, it’s a welcome change to be part of a team that prioritizes safety and takes concerns seriously.

During her free time, you will find Ember spending time with her family. With two young kids, she says most of her time is spent at her pool, building Legos, and cooking a good meal.
